Hello world.

I just realised that despite having this dA account for a couple of years now I haven’t said anything about who I am. I’ve just expected people to guess or already know me, neither of which are particularly easy to do. But better late than never I guess;

My name is Laurie D. Cook and I live inside your comp-u-tor, at least for all intensive purposes I do since we’re probably never going to meet each other. This isn’t going well is it? I’ll do it in bullet point form; I can handle that with more ease.

Facts about me;

• I am from En-ger-land
• I am 21 years old
• I write things down and hope people will enjoy them, even if it is with a smirking sense of irony at how crap it all is. (that was self-deprecation in the hope of endearing myself to you)
• I am doing a degree in chemistry
• I’m gay
• I’m an atheist
• I don’t like spiders
• In political terms I’m a democratic socialist (read left wing hippy/over-optimist)
• I’m not a hippy/over-optimist
• I play guitar, violin and video games
• Top 5 bands – manic street preachers, bright eyes, Belle and Sebastian, Bob Dylan and the clash
• Top 5 authors – George Orwell, Haruki Murakami, Kurt Vonnegut, Albert Camus and JG Ballard
• Top 5 films – Amelie, fight club, the great dictator, reservoir dogs and the godfather
• I live in Hull at the moment where I’m doing a year in industry as part of my uni course
• I have a brother and a sister
• I have OCD about the number 147
• I still have to lie when people ask me what it is I want to do with my life
• I would like to write a book though
• And finish learning Japanese
• I stopped taking my anti-depressants a little over a year ago and I’m still not sure if that was a good idea (this is where I actually start to enjoy the relative anonymity of the internet since apart from my doctor nobody else knows that I took them)
• I can’t stand the sound of slamming doors
• I hitchhike places even though I own a car just so that I can improvise characters in real time to the people giving me lifts
• I hate the taste of all alcoholic drinks apart from cointreau and pernod
• I smoke lucky strike original red cigarettes and have no intention of quitting
• I can’t do math
• I haven’t self harmed for almost 2 months now and I feel a little proud of this
• I am “indie rock” (though this lost all meaning now hasn’t it? When a genre is supposedly able to accommodate bands with as diverse a sound, statement and style as Belle and Sebastian, pavement, the flaming lips and the pigeon detectives then it has to e assume d that an attempt to consolidate into the mainstream has created a diluted and muted form that is more dependent on differences based on trouser shape and hairstyle)
• I have a lip ring (lower left)
• I think that the UK should break off diplomatic relations with Qatar until they put a U into their name.
• I don’t like a single song or story that I’ve posted here
• I consider cheese with blue veins in it to be “fucking awesome”

So there you go world, that was 20 years of living distilled into 30 bullet points. I like to think that we’ve both learned a little bit from this haven’t we? Probably not, but I like to think we have.
